The Egyptian President signs a law on female genital mutilation

The Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, signed amendments submitted by Parliament to toughen the penalties imposed on the crime of female genital mutilation prevalent in Egypt.
According to the amendments, “anyone who performs female circumcision by partially or completely removing any part of her external genitalia, or inflicts injuries to those organs, shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than 5 years.”
The amendments also included that “if that act results in a permanent disability, the punishment shall be temporary hard labor for a period of no less than seven years. If the act leads to death, the punishment shall be temporary hard labor for a period of no less than ten years.”
