On suspicion of smuggling airsoft rifles and parts thereof to the West Bank to convert them into firearms, the Israeli General Security “Shin Bet” arrested 3 Israelis and 3 residents of Hebron.
In an official statement, Israeli security said: This type of weapon is more accessible due to its being cheaper and more available, unlike other weapons, noting that some of these weapons have been converted from plastic guns by replacing the barrel and assembly.
The statement indicated that several attacks have been carried out in recent years with converted weapons, including the shooting in October 2016 near the National Police headquarters in Jerusalem (a civilian woman and a police officer were killed), the assassination of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin in October 2015 and several shootings. Israeli army units have been targeted in Judea and Samaria during the past two years.
The Public Security Agency stressed that it would continue to work to enforce the ban on smuggling plastic rifles to elements in Judea and Samaria.
