In the first official telephone conversation between the Russian Foreign Ministry and its American counterpart, Sergey Lavrov announced to his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, his country’s readiness to normalize bilateral relations with the United States.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov held telephone talks with Blinken, congratulating him on his assumption of the position of US Secretary of State, expressing his readiness for a constructive dialogue on a wide range of issues.
statement added that Lavrov and Blinken “welcomed, in continuation of the telephone conversation between the Russian and American presidents, the extension of the Treaty on Limiting Offensive Strategic Weapons until 2026, which will contribute to improving the situation in the field of international security and strategic stability.”
They also discussed the contribution to a sound settlement in both Syria and Libya, in addition to the situation in Ukraine.
According to the State Department, Lavrov drew Blinken’s attention to cases of persecution of people participating in protests against the results of the presidential elections in the United States, calling for ensuring transparency in the relevant judicial processes.
