A lengthy phone call between American and Chinese presidents

first official phone call between the Chinese and American presidents was marked by a long period of time, as it approached two hours. President Biden announced that he had spoken with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, stressing that open relations towards China are a priority for his country, while Xi warned that the confrontation would be “catastrophic” for the two countries.

Biden revealed that the United States had turned away from the approach taken by his predecessor Donald Trump’s administration towards China, saying: “There is no need for a conflict between us, but there will be intense competition” with China.

He continued, “I will not act like Trump did, and he knows that, because he too was sending messages … we intend to focus on the rules of the international game.”
