Recent months have witnessed intensive Egyptian efforts and intense diplomatic moves by the permanent Egyptian Foreign Ministry mission in New York and Egyptian embassies abroad, to mobilize support for the adoption of an unprecedented Egyptian draft resolution on “protecting the rights of women and girls from the repercussions of the Corona”, which resulted in the adoption of more than fifty countries. To take the initiative and adopt the draft resolution unanimously.
In a statement published today, the following was stated: “Egypt was able to adopt the resolution unanimously and by consensus, during the work of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on human rights, and on social, humanitarian and cultural issues.”
The decision sheds light on the special needs of women and girls during the pandemic, addresses the economic and social repercussions on their rights during the pandemic, and offers a practical vision for how to enhance national and international dealing with these repercussions, and the decision aims to strengthen national and international efforts aimed at mitigating the repercussions of the Corona pandemic on women and girls, And highlighting their special needs during the pandemic period by eliminating violence against them, providing them with the necessary health and social services, and ensuring their continued inclusion in the preparation of national and international plans to confront the pandemic.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, represented by the human rights sector at the Ministry, had prepared a draft resolution within the framework of coordination and cooperation with the National Council for Women to implement what was stated in the policy paper prepared by the Council on dealing with the implications of the new Corona virus (Covid 19) on the needs of women and girls.
